I am often asked this question or similar by my clients "Do we need to do engagement photos?" and/or "what are they for?" My answer to the first is "no you do not need to do engagement photos". They are definitely not a mandatory event.  They are more like a bonus. and if you are a picture-holic you'll probably want to do them. Photographers and couples have many reasons for doing them. Some of them might be: "I get to see what side of my face looks better in photos... or you may want some photos before the wedding day to enlarge and/or create a guest signing book... it's a chance to get practice... meet and work with the photographer, etc. If I was to give one reason why I like doing them, it's because I get to hang out with my clients before there wedding day and get to know them better. It's also usually pretty fun trying to make them laugh etc... It is a somewhat different photo style to the wedding day; to put it bluntly it's a glorified fashion shoot. The wedding day is very different in that something truly and honestly is being photographed. - I do prefer the wedding day to an engagement session. I guess just because it feels more honest. All this being said I am probably sounding very negative. However I totally LOVED the photo-shoot below with this uber cute couple I'll be shooting next year. Love love love...
